District History

Altrusa International, Inc. has been active in Texas since 1930.

International, Inc. affectionately dedicates this History to Dr. Nina Fay Calhoun

Dr. Nina Fay Calhoun, a leading dermatologist of Dallas, Texas, wrote the history of Old District Seven from its inception in 1930 when there were 10 clubs, to the close of its history when redistricting began in 1955.   Redistricting was completed in 1956 and Texas became District Nine.  Dr. Nina Fay Calhoun served as International President 1941-45.

Detailed History of District Nine

This jade pendant is passed on to each succeeding Governor of District Nine. It was given to Governor Willie Walker during her term 1948-50 by In-Ai Yang. In-Ai Yang received a Scholarship from Altrusa to attend Vanderbilt University Nursing School. The carved jade symbolizes love, good wishes and prosperity and it has become a tradition for each Governor to receive the pendant.
