Altrusa International of Southwest Dallas County

Altrusa International of Southwest Dallas County, Inc. (ASWDC) is one of 36 Altrusa clubs in the great State of Texas that comprises District Nine of Altrusa International, Inc.

Altrusa International of Southwest Dallas County, Inc. meets the 2nd Thursday of each month at 6:00 PM. Meetings are held at the Jubilee Event Center, 110 N. Lyndalyn, DeSoto, Texas 75115, located just off the intersection of S. Hampton Road and Beltline Road. Lyndalyn runs parallel to Hampton Road and the address is directly behind the Church’s Chicken Restaurant.  Our regular meetings include a full dinner of meat and vegetables, and includes salad, dessert and beverage.  The cost is $5 per person which can be paid at each meeting or in a lump sum payment for the year.

Altrusa is an international association of professional women and men who volunteer their energies for community betterment.  Altrusa is also a community service organization that espouses leadership, volunteerism & service, and fights for literacy and against AIDS.

Altrusa International of Southwest Dallas County, Inc. was chartered on November 5, 1993.  Most of our service projects take place within local communities including DeSoto, Lancaster, Duncanville, South Oak Cliff, Cedar Hill, Glenn Heights and other surrounding communities.  The ASWDC Club is involved in regular on-going service events such as volunteering at the DeSoto Library, donating to and volunteering at the Cedar Hill and DeSoto Food Pantries, and holding bingo and popcorn socials at DeSoto Nursing Home. Weekly reading events at Amber Terrace Elementary School, and supporting Educational First Steps organization at such functions as Literacy Day at the Dallas Zoo, supports the club’s literacy commitment within the community. On Wednesdays, club members arrive at Amber Terrace and read to classes of elementary students. Volunteers add fun to these reading events by dressing in character on some occasions such as Mrs. Claus during Christmas, Dr. Seuss characters in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, and Halloween characters during Halloween.

Giving Birth to Reading, a project started by ASWDC in 2015, provides baby bags to expectant mothers at Charlton Methodist Hospital. To promote literacy, while each bag contains baby items for the little ones, it also includes a book to encourage expectant mothers to begin reading to their babies while they are in the womb.

In addition to club-sponsored events, ASWDC partners with other local organizations for events such as DeSoto ISD Back-2-School Fair, Alley Scholars Summit at Southern Methodist University (SMU), and Backing-the-Blue, a project that recognize police officers who serve and protect our communities. In partnership with Domino’s Pizza, ASWDC provided pizza lunches to the Desoto, Glenn Heights, Lancaster and Cedar Hill police departments during the 2016 fall program.

ASWDC also participates and supports the annual Great Days of Service project in DeSoto, which sponsors several community service-related activities within the community, and joins with many other local community service groups.

Community service is what we are about and it is what we do with a passion for helping others and building better communities through the projects we initiate and participate in.

We invite you to join us on an exciting journey to build better communities!  For additional information or to join us, please see contact information above.
